Suicide Forest in Japan

Why would someone kill themselves? I read one quote which reads 'Suicidal people are just angels who wants to go home'. Well this is just to pacify the situation or the person. One can indulge in a long debate about the thoughts of people committing suicide and it may go nowhere. Suicidal doesn't kill people sadness kills them.

Aokigahara also known as the suicide forest or Sea of Trees which lies at Northwest base of Mount Fuji. This forest has a historic association with scary, angry ghosts of dead in Japanese Mythology and it has been tagged as a common suicide point.

The forest is reportedly the most popular site for suicide in Japan and among the top three  most popular site for suicide in the world. Approx 30 suicides are documented every year during the period leading up to 1988.

  • In 2003, 105 bodies were found in the forest which exceeded the previous record of 78 bodies in 2002
  • In 2010, more than 200 (estimated) people had attempted suicide in the forest, of whom 54 completed the act
  • The most common means of suicide in the forest were hanging or drug overdose- as of 2011
  • With these big numbers. the local officials has stopped publicizing the number of deaths in an attempt to downplay Aokigahara's associations with suicide.

This has led the officials to put a sign board at the forest entry written in Japanese, urging suicidal visitors to seek help and not to end their lives.

It is said that the forest is reputedly haunted by angry spirits of those left to die.
